It has many of the symptoms of PMS and a touch of menopause. At first you may wonder what is happening to me, I’m too young for this! Perimenopause can be the months or years leading up to your last period or menopause. Some women experience flow changes in their menses, a heavier or longer period. You may even skip a period. Some of us just breeze through perimenopause. I would certainly recommend New Life Formula for Women and Evening Primrose during this transition. Any of the suggestions for PMS or Menopause would be helpful. Menopause is a positive change. This change usually begins between the ages of 45 and 55. We need to change our attitude about the change of life. It has always sounded like an unpleasant ending. The fact is, this is the BEGINNING, not the end. Surgical menopause is more difficult because you don’t ease into the change of life. Even if you keep your ovaries, you experience a more rapid change. Whatever type of menopause you experience, it doesn’t have to be terrible for you. We know more about our bodies than we ever have. We are an army of menopausal women—we have each other to learn from and lean on!!! All the passages in life should be celebrated…especially this one. Seize the opportunity of menopause to be better than you have ever been. History shows us that ancient women were revered and respected after the change. Because they held their blood, they were called Wise Blood and Crone. This was a time of wisdom, power and freedom. They were believed to be wise because of their years and this was the beginning of a more spiritual and beautiful life. This belief was so strong that it was, indeed, the truth. This was a tribal truth that was all but wiped out by our “age conscious” culture. Attitudes can be passed from one generation to another. Because of the interest in health—spiritual and physical—women are now openly celebrating their age and believing in their own wisdom. Women’s liberation was and is more than bra burning and equal pay. It was a movement towards equal rights and respect at any age. We need to respect and celebrate all our passages. Symptoms: First, I need to remind you that we are all different. You may or may not experience these symptoms—you may even create some new ones. As your body makes some of the changes, you may feel that this is far from natural and even uncomfortable. Your body stops ovulating and producing estrogen. The menses gradually stops. Many of these changes begin during the peimenopausal period. For instance, estrogen levels begin to drop off as the ovaries produce less estrogen, and other organs begin to take over. In fact, the fat in and on your body stores estrogen for that “rainy day.” Organs called the endocrine glands secrete hormones to help you body functions. There are some women who seem to breeze through menopause. The problem I have with that is that they have no sign posts to show them the ”way.” The “way” is to prevent premature aging and improve mental health. Osteoporosis, incontinence, thinning hair, vaginal dryness, and heart disease can be problems because of menopause. Loss of libido is common during menopause. This is why we often hear it referred to as a “Pause from men.” More women feel free of the worry of pregnancy and are also more comfortable with their own bodies. They enjoy sex more. .Some women also experience a “mental fog” that is referred to as mental-pause. It isn’t permanent. Sometimes when I’m talking to a women friend, I forget the name of something or someone and she will look at me and say, “I know.” Then we laugh. WHAT TO DO? You do need estrogen and progesterone. There is less chance of uterine cancer with the combination. Man made HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is not the answer. It has many side effects like depression, headaches, water retention, vaginal discharge, yeast infections, an mood swings. Remember it can increase the chances of cancer. In the July 22, 2002 issue of Newsweek they broke the latest story about the dangers of synthetic HRT. In a study that involved 16,000 women who were observed for roughly 5 years, researchers found conclusively that the hormones in Prempro raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer. Most women are estrogen dominant due to the meat we eat, the air we breathe, in other words, our environment. To balance that, you need balance in hormonal replacement therapy. Progesterone and estrogen. Remember I’m talking about natural hormonal replacement therapy. ESTROGEN helps reduce the following problems faced by menopausal women: bone loss, the chance of heart attack, the thinning of vaginal walls, mood swings, hot flashes, the drying of skin, the chances of incontinence, healthy blood pressure, improves cholesterol count, memory loss, helps keep skin thicker by slowing the breakdown of collagen and more. Estrogen is not just one hormone—it is a class or group of hormones. The most important compounds in estrogen are estradiol, estrone, and estriol. It is a very powerful hormone necessary for female characteristics and female reproductive functions. When it fluctuates, it is felt all through the body. PROGESTERONE helps regulate the endocrine system, regulates salt retention, is a natural diuretic, helps normalize thyroid function, helps use fat for energy, normalizes blood clotting, helps with depression, build and stimulates bone replacement and restores sex drive. Progestin is not progesterone. The natural progestrone is what you want. Many doctors will say that if you don’t have a uterus, you don’t need progesterone. Progesterone is important to the whole body, even your hair. Thinning hair can be a result of lack of progesterone. Sarsaparilla is a great hair herb and one source of “natural “ progesterone. Wild yam and Sarsaparilla are in New Life for Women. As you approach menopause, experience it and move into the second half of your life, nature can assist you.
