ARTHRITISINFORMATION:Arthritis is the presence of pain and inflamma-tion in the joints. This includes the neck and back. It can be in just one finger or throughout the body. Most folks experience pain, swelling and/or stiffness. It can be a constant ache or sharp pain - especially with movement. There are more than 200 types of arthritis. The most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is connected to the wear and tear on joints that comes with age. The cartilage at the end of bones becomes rough, creating friction. Muscles, tendons and ligaments become weaker and they can’t hold the joints together as they once did. This is why physical activity for the problem area that increases muscle strength is very important. Joints can become deformed and painful. Rheumatoid arthritis is inflammatory and attacks the membranes surrounding the fluids that lubricate the joints. The entire body is affected, not just one joint. Symptoms are stiffness, fatigue, swelling, fever, crippling pain and even weight loss. Emotional and physical stress are often associated with the beginning of rheuma-toid arthritis. Poor nutrition and bacterial infection can also be the culprits. Hot soaks in the tub are soothing. Check for food reactions or allergies. Some folks find that foods from the nightshade family increase their discomfort (white potatoes, toma-toes, green peppers and eggplant). Try to include onions, garlic, eggs, green leafy vegetables, whole grains and brown rice. Choose fish over red meat and reduce intake of salt and sugar. Iron is suspected of increasing pain, so do not take it in pill form. Try to get it naturally from blackstrap molasses, broccoli, cauliflower, fish, peas, sunflower seeds, parsley, dandelion, nettles, kelp and chickweed.
